Title Cards
Meant to represent the film or show, the title card is a unique logo with lots of personality. These have been my long-time favorite side project as I find new ways to imagine what a Marvel character’s silver screen debut may look like.
“In the Marvel Universe, logos are designed to inhabit the same world as the comic book’s characters.”
-Liz Stinson
Illuminati
The Illuminati are a group of superheroes in the Marvel Universe who work secretly behind the scenes to combat morally tricky scenarios. This group comprises Iron Man, Namor, Mr. Fantastic, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, and Professor X. The title card design for this group had to not only be faithful to the original comic logo but also capture the more occult feeling that is reminiscent of The Illuminati.
Nova
Nova is an intergalactic superhero in the Marvel Universe with powers like flight, super strength, and enhanced durability. Since he can often be seen traveling the stars, Nova’s title card had to be space-y and true to his iconic comic logos. So I blended some of his most famous logos and gave it a NASA/Star Wars vibe.
Young Avengers
The Young Avengers is one of my favorite teams, assembled after the original Avengers disbanded; this group of misfits are not only fun but dangerous, with notable characters such as Wiccan, Hulking, America Chavez, Patriot, Hawkeye, and More. This team’s title card has to be fun without going overboard, so I went with a neon sign-type design, much like one of their comic runs has. While also calling back to the MCU Avengers movie title cards, with the subtle “Dark Glass” effect in the center.
Hulkling
Hulkling is the Emperor of the Skull-Kree Empire, Young Avenger, and Husband to Wiccan. He can shapeshift and fly but is separate from the Hulk as they have zero relation (comics, am I right?). So to distance him from the Hulk, his title card couldn’t feature green or purple, two of his most iconic colors. So instead, we base his off the Emperor Hulkling Run and make it gold—a proper fit for the king of space.
X-Men
The X-Men are among the most loved superhero teams, and the fans cannot wait for their debut in the MCU. With members such as Wolverine, Storm, Beast, Professor X, Cyclops, and many more, this team has been a parallel to the Civil Rights Movement and the world outside our window since they were first printed, making them a voice for many. Naturally, their title card had to be as iconic as their yellow suits and, as always, be faithful to the source material.
A look behind the curtain.
It first starts with drawing out some rough ideas in Procreate on iPad. This is also where I typically brainstorm and gather reference materials. For this project specifically, I’m looking at the source material, which is the classic comic book title covers they did for the heroes. Many of these heroes have had a multitude of artists and styles over the years and title cards along with them. So, unless I want to stick to an iconic theme, I try to blend various elements from different versions of their title cards. The next step is taking it through Adobe Illustrator on the Mac and making a clean body or base for the overall design. This is then taken into Adobe Photoshop to add special effects, textures, blending, and more.
